Paradoxical Commandments

As we enter the liturgical season of Lent, Christians reflect on how they might better their relationship with God and with the human community in which they live and have their being. It is a time when some decide to intensify their attention to personal spiritual growth, while others seek to encounter God in the person of the poor and vulnerable.

During this Lent – like in the past – I will seek new spiritual wisdom through scripture and inspirational literature or articles that challenge an honest self assessment, and (hopefully) guide me to living my faith more authentically. Years ago, I was gifted a sweet little book entitled Anyway: The Paradoxical Commandments by Kent M. Keith. I came across the book again during a house cleaning adventure last month. It is essentially a book about the wisdom, joy and grace that can come from facing the cynicism and negativity of the world with the best of ourselves. Keith offers ten principles that he first noted as a Harvard student during the 1960’s. Since then, his principles have been circulated widely and have been quoted by countless students, politicians, teachers, business and religious leaders. Indeed, these “paradoxical commandments” were found taped to the walls in the children’s home run by St. Mother Teresa and her Missionaries of Charity in India. I share them here with hope that they may inspire your Lent in some little way.

1) People are illogical, unreasonable, and self-centered. Love them anyway.
2) If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish ulterior motives. Do good anyway.
3) If you are successful, you will win false friends and true enemies. Succeed anyway.
4) The good you do today will be forgotten tomorrow. Do good anyway.
5) Honesty and frankness make you vulnerable. Be honest and frank anyway.
6) The biggest men and women with the biggest ideas can be shot down by the smallest men and women with the smallest ideas. Think big anyway.
7) People favor underdogs but follow only top dogs. Fight for a few underdogs anyway.
8) What you spend years building may be destroyed overnight. Build anyway.
9) People really need help but may attack you if you do help them. Help people anyway.
10) Give the world the best that you have and you’ll get kicked in the teeth. Give the world the best you have anyway.

Let me humbly add an 11th paradoxical commandment for our Ledgers to consider this Lent:

11) Living the Ledger Way core values can be difficult and exhausting, and can draw ridicule from others. Live the Ledger Way core values anyway.

Be assured of my prayers for a great Lent in the Springs community.

Our Lady of the Ledge, pray for us.
Mr. Eamonn O’Keeffe,
High School Principal

SMSA World Language Travel Transportation Fund

Traveling abroad is an exciting and enriching opportunity for students where they can experience the beauty, authenticity and relevance of the subject they are studying. Students are responsible for funding the majority of their trip; however, SMSA has established this account to aid in funding bus transportation to and from the airport. Your donation today will ensure students, along with faculty chaperones, have a safe and reliable mode of transportation to start and end their traveling abroad experience.

This summer, students have an opportunity to travel to Costa Rica for Spanish class, and Germany for their German class. Thank you for supporting SMSA’s World Language Travel Experiences!

WI Parental Choice Program Opens February 1, 2024

The WI Parental Choice Program (WPCP) online application period will open February 1, 2024 and will close on Thursday April 18, 2024.

The DPI requires current Choice families to fill out the application for the 2024-2025 school year. Filling out the application for next school year (2024-2025) informs the DPI that you want to receive your Choice voucher for 2024-2025. If the DPI does not receive an application from a current Choice family the DPI assumes that you do not want the voucher for the next school year and your voucher will not be renewed.

New and current families must electronically submit their application here.

Current Choice families are not required to provide income documentation.

NEW families, applying for a school voucher, must be income eligible to apply. The following income limits have been posted for 2024-2025:
Family Size Maximum Yearly Income*
1 $32,076
2 $43,384
3 $54,692
4 $66,000
5 $77,308
6 $88,616
For each additional member in a family add $11,308.

Family income includes the income of the student’s parent(s)/legal guardian(s) that reside in the same household as the student.
Current Choice families are not required to provide income documentation. Proof of residency documents are required for current and new families.

WI Parental Choice Program information is available on our SMSA website by going to the Enroll tab at the top.
